2008 Building Energy Efficiency Standards went into effect January 1, 2025, and supersede the 2005 Standards. Projects that apply for a building permit on or after this date must comply with the 2008 Standards.

This course is divided so that there will be a two (2) hour course from 8:00 am to 10:00 am for the residential energy standards and a two (2) hour course on commercial energy standards from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. These same two courses will then be offered again this same day in the afternoon beginning at 1:00 pm so that companies and jurisdictions may divide their staff for attendance or you may join us for both sessions. Please specify on the registration form below which session you wish to attend.

The class for residential HVAC Energy requirements for alterations and new construction, including HERS Rating requirements and indoor air quality, will discuss the testing required by the HVAC installer for HVAC installation in new construction and alterations; the forms required and what to look for on the forms; HERS rating requirements; and we will also discuss the ASHRAE 62.2 indoor air requirements.

The class for Nonresidential HVAC Energy requirements for alterations and New Construction, including HERS Rating requirements, will discuss the testing required by the HVAC installer for HVAC installation in new construction and alterations; which forms are required and what to look for on the forms; and specific HERS rating requirements for small commercial buildings.

Upon completion, participants will:

CREDITS: A certificate of continuing education will be provided at the conclusion of class. 
SPEAKERS: Tav Commins has been a Mechanical Engineer with the California Energy Commission for the last twelve years. During this time he has led the incorporation of building commissioning ("Acceptance Requirements") into the 2005 and proposed 2008 Title 24 Building Standards.  Mr. Commins is the lead staff member on the Title 24 HVAC HERS measures.  He conducts training of building officials and HVAC contractors on the state energy codes throughout the state. Previously, Mr. Commins managed the Energy Commission’s Energy Hotline which answers questions about California's energy code.
Nelson Pena is a Mechanical Engineer with the California Energy Commission and has been involved in all aspects of the Energy Standards development.  In addition Nelson is a Board voting member on the National Fenestration Rating Council an organization that measures and standardized the efficiency of windows.  He is also a part time instructor at Diablo Valley College and has instructed many students who are now employed by building departments.

TIME: Sign-in begins at 7:50 am and again at 12:45 pm; the morning class will start at 8:00 am and end by 12:00 pm and the afternoon class will begin at 1:00 pm and end at 5:00 pm.
